We had just two phones, one in my dad's office and one in the upstairs hallway. I can remember lying on the floor in the hallway talking to friends, but, of course, everyone could hear you. You couldn't go talk in your bedroom. My dad was a pastor, so we were always reminded that we couldn't "tie up the phone" because someone might need to reach him. And all of us kids had to talk to parishoners periodically to take messages and sometimes even act as a listening ear. You learned manners and how to live without always putting yourself first. It was a good life!
